ABOUT CARROT GREEN ROOF
The creation of the Carrot Green Roof has been a unique collaboration of professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, academics, community members and workers, who have come together to create a beautiful space – to serve and protect the environment and sustain members of the community in both body and spirit.
The Carrot Green Roof represents:
- A visible working model of connecting communities through collaboration.
- A place where urban dwelling meets natural diversity.
- A showcase for urban biodiversity.
One of our goals is to apply the principles of biodiversity in all practices and procedures through the planning, building, and reinventing of the garden space. Diversity is welcomed, and in the struggle toward new understanding, new meanings and ideas are formed which, in turn, become a part of what the garden is. It is our intention that ‘The Garden’ will be used as a venue for community sharing – a place that evolves and teaches – a place to nurture and be nourished – a place of enterprise and abundance – a place of cultivation and growth – a place of memories and new beginnings.
The Carrot Green Roof space is among the first of its kind to be open to the public in the city of Toronto, and containing such a wide range of vegetation and innovative practices within its intensive and extensive gardens. The knowledge gathered through our on-line Learning Hub and from the gardens and experimental vertical growing spaces can benefit future projects across the city. Opportunities for collaboration and enterprise will continue to evolve, and will engage and support those interested in green roofs in new and exciting ways.
The Carrot Green Roof website is to be an interactive space where users can navigate through the various rooftop gardens, connect through upcoming rooftop and community events, participate as a volunteer and access new information for learning. The CGR Learning Hub is divided into various categories on green roofs – including urban agriculture, food issues and research projects where community members are encouraged to contribute their content and experiences to the learning network. Other features will include a place for videos, photos, how-to-tutorials and general invitations for collaboration. The CGR Learning Hub will become a place of knowledge generation and transfer among participants.
